But why rhino ‘poef’ (aka kak)?
The ancient Egyptians used dried cow dung as the fuel in their ceramic smoke pots. And many other cultures have been using dried dung from a variety of herbivorous mammals for thousands of years.
Fast forward to modern times, and the most commonly used smoke pot fuels are pine needles, pinecones, wood shavings, sawdust, newspaper, cardboard, cotton, burlap, straw and hay.
But how certain are you that your fuel has not been treated with any chemicals, paints, dyes, plastics, rubber, or additives that could cause toxicity or even death to your bees?
Unless you’ve foraged for or made your own organic material fuel, there’s no way of being 100% sure.
So, to solve this problem, we source the 100% genuine and natural rhino ‘poef’ for our Wild Bee Fuel directly from charitable institutions who feed their animals with a high-quality plant-based diet.
Dried by the sun, it makes a fantastic dense fuel that emits a grey/white smoke when lit.
Tried and tested on the bees, we have discovered that rhino ‘poef’ is an exceptionally good and long-lasting fuel for your smoker.
Why do I need smoke for bees?
Fuel for your smoker is a must-have beekeeping item.
When you use to smoke, it calms the bees making it easier and safer for you to inspect your hives and extract honey.
Smoke works by alerting bees to the proximity of the fire, encouraging them to temporarily leave the hive. However, before doing so, they consume as much honey as possible which ultimately makes it harder for them to curve their abdomens down to sting you.
It also works by masking the alarm pheromones that guard bees emit when they believe their hive is threatened. Without the ability to detect the pheromone, the rest of the bee colony fail to realise that anything is amiss.
That makes it easier for you to do what you do best … care for your bees and harvest wonderful honey.
We are passionate about supporting the welfare and protection of rhinos, and that’s why we give 10% of all proceeds to the wonderful charity The Rhino Orphanage.
